Liotard (1702 – 89, b. Switzerland) portrays some of the typical eccentricities of the artist temperament.  He spent some time in Constantinople and was so overwhelmed by Turkish culture that upon his return he couldn’t shed it.

Der Spargroschen

This title means something like “the nest-egg” or “spare change.”  You get the impression that the wife labored to make this little piece of change and now the husband – with slight, satisfied smile – carefully tucks it away.

New York (Greenpoint, Brooklyn) artist Sam Webber paints for a range of clients that includes The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Time, Business Week and Men’s health.  No wonder.  Here are a few examples of his stuff (the latter is from the Biblical account of Abraham sacrificing Isaac):

Ecce Homo

This copper plate by Martin Schongauer (1447 – 1491) represents a scene from the Gospel of John. After the Roman governor Pontius Pilate had him scourged, Jesus was crowned with thorns and presented to the Jewish people. “Behold the man!”, John quotes Pilate. In the Latin Bible translation by Hieronymus that became Ecce Homo!
