Sermon Feedback

Monday, August 16th, 2010
Jennifer Henkel sent me this note about yesterday's sermon.  I totally agree with her thoughts and want others to benefit from them so, with her permission, here's what Jen has to say:  "This will be short and sweet, I promise. Loved your message yesterday. Loved especially your point about living in the real world, dealing with real world concerns, and how that appeals to unbelievers. Now on to the negative, shall we? I felt it was missing one important thing (obviously my opinion). The part about not worrying because everything is in God's hands and He will provide, if the source and root of one's worry is based on the assumption that God… Read More

Keller on Criticism

Thursday, December 17th, 2009
Tim Keller writes: Recently several people have asked me 'how do you deal with harsh criticism?' In each case, the inquirer had felt stung by what they felt were unfair attacks on him or her. In this internet age, anyone can have their views censured unfairly by people they don't know. So what do you do when that happens? Here's is the gist of the counsel I give people when they ask me about this. For years I've been guided by a letter… Read More

The Dangers of Controversy

Monday, October 12th, 2009
A minister, about to write an article criticizing a fellow minister for his lack of orthodoxy, wrote to John Newton of his intention. Newton replied (The Works of John Newton, Letter XIX "On Controversy.") as follows: Dear Sir, As you are likely to be engaged in controversy, and your love of… Read More

A Descent Into The Maelstrom

Friday, July 24th, 2009

That's the title of this fine piece by Stephen Kroniger.  And this is how life really feels and really goes for lots of people.  "But we have an anchor for the soul"  (Heb 6:19).  It's so good to be safely, firmly anchored by grace; anchored to the Rock.

Do I Have to Forgive?

Monday, July 20th, 2009
Some people say that we only forgive when asked.  Others say we should forgive even if not asked.  Who’s right?  Two scripture passages help.  First, Luke 17.3 – “if a brother sins, rebuke him.  And if he repents, forgive him.”  Notice the “if.”  We only forgive if asked.  But in a second passage (Mark 11.25) Jesus says “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone…”  Here forgiveness is granted before anybody asks for it.  How do we put these two passages together?  I think like this.  Forgiveness has an outward and an inward component.  The outward component is a social contract. … Read More

Getting Smarter

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009
Finally, somebody wrote a blurb that tells me how to get smarter!  He (Seth Godin) writes:
"If you're in a meeting with smart people and they start discussing a term or concept you don't understand, what do you do?  If smart people in your industry are talking about an issue you don't know cold, it's very important that you don't just sit there and nod your head sagely. I think there are two constructive paths. The first is to ask. "Wait, I was with you until a second ago. What does… Read More

Movies?

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009
Here are some questions that theologian John Frame has in mind when watching a film:

1. Who wrote the film? Who produced it? Who directed it? Do we know through the writings and previous work of these people anything about their philosophy of life? The previous works of actors are also important. Actors… Read More
