Southern Baptist Decline

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
Here's a troubling article about Southern Baptist Decline.  One of the most important lines in the article is "Southern Baptists face further decline without renewed evangelism emphasis."  SB's need a renewed evangelism emphasis? What happened?  The article points to a 50 year decline.  So I guess many factors could be responsible for the decline.  But here's one I want you to think about.  Could it be that the recent swing toward sound doctrine, especially at Southern Seminary (and thank God for that swing and that doctrine), and toward Calvinism in particular… Read More

Here are two fine pieces by Janee Noble (Southern California artist).  They've been laboriously carved into linoleum; a process that took about 30 hours each.  The first is of Ezekiel eating the scroll. The second, Cain slaying Abel. Read More

Getting Smarter

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009
Finally, somebody wrote a blurb that tells me how to get smarter!  He (Seth Godin) writes:
"If you're in a meeting with smart people and they start discussing a term or concept you don't understand, what do you do?  If smart people in your industry are talking about an issue you don't know cold, it's very important that you don't just sit there and nod your head sagely. I think there are two constructive paths. The first is to ask. "Wait, I was with you until a second ago. What does… Read More

new wine remix

Monday, June 15th, 2009
Jesus said "And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins- and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins" (Mk 2.22).  Here's a contemporary remix of Jesus' ancient words (it's from Hugh MacLeod's "Ignore Everybody" portfolio series and is also found in his new book "Ignore Everybody").  There's lots of wisdom in this for persons with the spiritual gifts of leadership (getting the church on her mission) and faith (vision). Christ Before Pilate

Saturday, June 13th, 2009
Duccio di Buoninsegna ca. 1255 – 1319. Duccio was born in Siena, where he lived until his death. Not much is known about him, the only sources of information are official records. He was trained in the rigid Byzantine style of painting but succeeded in adding more life and emotion to his work than his predecessors. Many of his larger works are surrounded by smaller tableaux showing scenes from everyday life. Ten of his works have survived the ages.  Here are a few (my blog compresses them a bit to fit onto the page.  Click on the image to decompress):

This guy's stuff is sweet.  What do you think of this one?  Is the guy in the "beater" dead and in heaven (the couple behind him seems to be grieving), or is he having some kind of an epiphany?  Or...?  Read More
